The two GST formulas every Kiwi business uses

Adding GST: GST-exclusive price × 1.15 = GST-inclusive price. A $2,000 job becomes $2,300 including GST.

Removing GST: GST-inclusive price ÷ 1.15 = GST-exclusive price, and inclusive price × 3 ÷ 23 = the GST portion. A $575 receipt contains $75 of GST.

Keeping GST under control

The safest habit is to move the GST portion of every payment you receive into a separate account, so the money is there when your return is due. If a big GST bill has already caught you short, a tax debt loan can clear it before penalties and interest grow. Our IRD debt cost calculator shows how fast that happens.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the GST rate in New Zealand?

GST in New Zealand is 15%. To add GST, multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.15. To remove it from a GST-inclusive price, divide by 1.15. The GST portion of an inclusive price is 3/23 of the total.

How do I work out the GST in a price that includes GST?

Multiply the GST-inclusive amount by 3 and divide by 23. For example, a $1,150 invoice includes $150 of GST. The calculator does this for you when you choose "Remove GST".

When does a business need to register for GST?

You must register for GST if your business turnover was more than $60,000 in the last 12 months, or is expected to be over $60,000 in the next 12 months. You can register voluntarily below that.

What if I can't pay my GST bill?

Contact IRD early, because late payment penalties and interest start the day after the due date. Many owners use a short-term business loan to clear GST arrears in one hit. See our GST and PAYE arrears loans page for options.
